The good thing of this exercise is that there is no right or wrong answer, because it’s all about idea generation. If this is the first time you are doing this on the average, probably you should have about 15 to 20 on the list.

If you do it more frequently, you can probably get up to 25 to even 30. If you have only like 10 or 12 on the list. Don’t feel bad because this is just a first try. What I will recommend you to do more of it. So just list it down. Don’t censor and you get the list in no time. Do simple or similar exercises like this every day.

You need not use the paper clip. You can use something else. You can use things like pen chairs, doors, mirrors, whatever the idea is, use it to generate more lists from that particular idea.

This exercise was adapted from Bob Mckim’s Creativity Exercise from the Stanford Design Program, and the objective is to generate as many ideas as possible within a short period of time. If you are not able to complete this exercise in under two minutes, it’s okay. Just practice more because the more you practice, the faster you will get in the future.
